Job Role Summary


We are currently seeking an experienced Tankage Engineer to join our on-site engineering team at Fawley Refinery and Chemical Plant. The largest refinery in the UK, Fawley is a combined refining, lubricants and chemicals manufacturing site which is located on the south coast of England, on the edge of the New Forest National Park.

Job Role Responsibilities


The Tankage Engineer is responsible for the mechanical and materials engineering support for the Fawley site tank population. Fawley has a population of about 200 atmospheric tanks and pressurised storage vessels, with an active maintenance and rehabilitation program.


The key responsibilities are:

  • Providing Inspection input to tank equipment strategies
  • Being the tankage Technical Advisor to the business teams, providing assistance with risk based decision making, and being the team’s designated contact for legislation relating to storage tanks and vessels.
  • Defining major repairs for tanks and supporting Inspectors who generate repair work scopes
  • Submitting risk assessed and scoped work items into the Annual Maintenance Plan and turnaround work lists
  • Transferring best practices and technology both into the business team and wider organisation

The role is based at our Fawley site, near Southampton, which is the largest and most technically complex refining and petrochemical facility in the UK.The successful candidate will work with a small team, which is part of the larger Fawley Area Engineering Service (FAES) Department. The FAES Department comprises of approximately 100 multidisciplinary engineers and technicians, and provides technical support across the Fawley refining and petrochemical facility.





Expected Level of Proficiency


To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Hold an engineering degree in materials or mechanical engineering, or an equivalent subject.
  • Be either a Chartered / Professionally Certified Engineer (mechanical or materials) or meet the UKAS RG2 ‘Category 1’ requirements and be judged to be the equivalent of a professional engineer.
  • Have 10+ years professional experience, preferably within an operating company or major engineering contractor (petrochemical, pharmaceutical, power, upstream or other heavy industry), with 3+ of these years spent working with tanks. Candidates with less than 10 years’ experience, but who have a high degree of relevant industry experience, will also be considered.


Candidates should also have demonstrated experience of:

  • Working on turnarounds / plant shutdowns and commissioning
  • Working in a dedicated inspection role utilising Risk Based Inspection methods
  • Supervising and leading others in inspection roles


Skills Required

The Tankage Engineer must self-motivated and able to prioritise and manage the tank worklist, in both a planned/ strategic environment and a reactive environment.

Successful candidates should possess a broad range of personal effectiveness and leadership skills, with the ability to facilitate and influence business decisions in a team environment.
