About the Department
At Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), our skilled teams operate and maintain our electricity distribution and transmission networks, carrying electricity to over 3.7 million homes across the north of the Central Belt of Scotland and Central Southern England.
Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power.
What is the Role?
System Planning is part of SSEN's Distribution System Operations (DSO) Directorate with overall responsibility for the planning and development of our distribution networks in the South of England. We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a System Planning Engineer to cater for the growth in renewable generation connections and manage our CAPEX investment programme to ensure that our electricity networks remain fully compliant with the technical and regulatory requirements of our license.
In this role, you'll gain wide ranging knowledge and experience of the electricity industry by working with other industry bodies, such as the industry regulator OFGEM, the UK Transmission Operator National Grid, and Renewable Developers. You'll take key responsibility for meeting our ongoing objectives to continuously improve the safety, security, reliability and capacity of our distribution networks identifying and specifying the works required to optimise the performance and condition of the existing assets and for producing documentation supporting our statutory license conditions.
You will also analyse the capability of our networks to accommodate both demand and high-volume generation connections, specify innovative technical solutions, and work closely with the design and delivery teams to ensure the network is developed in the most economic, efficient and co-ordinated manner to meet customer requirements.
Our transition to DSO requires us to adopt new approaches to accommodating increased penetration of low carbon technology connections such as PV, wind, electric vehicles and heat pumps - through flexible operation of the network. An important part of the role will be to ensure that the learning from our on-going high-profile low carbon innovation projects are transferred and embedded into our day-to-day System Planning function.
What do I need?
To succeed in this role, you should be qualified to a minimum HNC level in Electrical Engineering and have a detailed knowledge of power systems networks, be commercially aware and have a passion for developing innovative solutions.
Experience using network modelling software would be advantageous. You'll also be a confident communicator with the ability to produce reasoned justifications in structured written reports, and be comfortable organising, planning and prioritising your workload to achieve demanding targets and deadlines.
