About the Department

SSEN owns two Distribution Network Operators (DNO): Southern Electric Power Distribution and Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution. SSEN is actively progressing the transition for each DNO to perform the role of Distribution System Operator (DSO). In the move to low carbon technology and maximum choice and flexibility for system users and customers, the success of this transition is critical to the future of the business.

Within DSO, we have several different departments which include System and Network Planning, Pricing and Forecasting, Operational Technology and our Control Rooms (North & South).

What is the Role?

We have an exciting opportunity for a DSO System Planning Engineer to cater for the growth in renewable generation connections and manage our CAPEX investment programme to ensure that our electricity networks remain fully compliant with the technical and regulatory requirements of our license. You will also gain wide ranging knowledge and experience of the electricity industry by working with other industry bodies, such as the industry regulator OFGEM, the UK Transmission Operator National Grid, and Renewable Developers.

In addition to the above, you'll analyse the capability of our networks to accommodate both demand and high volume generation connections, specify innovative technical solutions, and work closely with the design and delivery teams to ensure the network is developed in the most economic, efficient and co-ordinated manner to meet customer requirements.

What do I need?

To succeed in this role, you should be qualified to a minimum HNC level in Electrical Engineering, have detailed knowledge of distribution networks, be commercially aware, have a passion for solving problems by developing cost efficient solutions and an ability to drive business strategies. You'll need to be a confident communicator with the ability to produce reasoned justifications in structured written reports and be comfortable organising, planning and prioritising your workload to achieve demanding targets and deadlines. Experience using network modelling software packages such as SinCal and/or PSSe would be advantageous.
