About the Department
The Transmission System Planning and Investment group is a critical function within the SHE Transmission business. It has the specialist technical capability and experience to undertake the system studies and designs required to plan the current and future Transmission network, and ensures that safety, security of supply and performance of the network is maintained in accordance with required planning standards, Grid Code, SQSS and other licence obligations.
We have recently completed a number of high-profile projects that saw significant reinforcement of our transmission network in the north of Scotland. These include the completion of the first 400kV line in our area and the first GB embedded VSC HVDC link, wholly within our network. We continue to see growth in the onshore and offshore connection of low carbon and renewable generation on our network. This is presenting us with exciting challenges in how we integrate these new connections onto our network while ensuring that the technical performance of the system is maintained. The role of the System Planning & Investment Engineer is an exciting opportunity for you to contribute to our strategic vision to facilitate the GB transition to a low carbon future.
What is the Role?
You'll have an outstanding opportunity to work on the development of our transmission network, acting as custodian and subject matter expert for the technical knowledge that is one of the teams primary roles. You'll carry out specialist power systems studies, underpinning investment decisions, and supporting our wider network development strategy as well as ensuring technical performance is fully understood and within acceptable limits. You'll work closely within the team to engage with our internal and external customers, ensuring expectations are managed, and met efficiently; your project portfolio will involve a variety of activities ranging from project design and governance to computer modelling of the network to ensuring integration of new technologies such as active network management systems, alternative conductor types, FACTS and HVDC links.
Part of your role will involve assessing the technical capability of the transmission network. As a member of the System Performance team, you will be involved in building our core model datasets and carrying out detailed analysis of how the system will perform both today and out into the future using a variety of software tools. With our system evolving, you will be involved in exploring complex issues including system stability, power quality and EMT-domain phenomena.
What do I need?
With an educational qualification in Electrical Engineering to a minimum of degree level (or equivalent), preferably with experience working in a similar field or company, you'll ideally hold experience within our industry, and have knowledge of the electricity network and the wider market we operate in. Relevant experience and knowledge would include power system design and modelling, operation, protection and safety of high voltage electricity networks, and an appreciation for the purpose and characteristics of each individual component.
In particular, we are looking for those with experience in using PSS/E, Power Factory, PSCAD and scripting for study automation. Knowledge of several of the following areas is desirable:
- Transient and voltage stability
- Bespoke user model development
- HVDC and FACTS modelling
- Energisation and TRV
Well look to you as a subject matter expert providing support to decision making; therefore, you should hold the ability to convey complex messages in an easy to understand manner. In addition, you'll have good project management skills with an ability to successfully complete work to deadlines and undertake high pressured briefs. Above all, you'll be motivated to learn in your role, and look to work within the team to provide expertise and process improvement suggestions where possible.
We also offer excellent opportunities to develop on the job. If you are a recent graduate, with a numerate degree, and keen to develop in the power system planning and investment area, we would be delighted to from you.
We're committed to ensuring we offer our people a great place to work, with competitive salary, contributory pension plan and benefits package.
