About the Department

Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.

What is the Role?

The SHE Transmission network is undergoing fundamental change through the connection of high volumes of renewable generation, introduction of HVDC and FACTS devices and connection of offshore windfarms via long 220kV AC cables. These present significant challenges to the transmission network and require detailed and careful operational analysis to ensure they can be safely incorporated, and procedures developed to allow staff to operate them safely. To meet this challenge Operations are required to assess technical proposals and ensure they are fit for purpose in relation to SHE Transmission operational requirements and conform to the Operational Safety Rules and associated standards and specifications.

The Operations team within Transmission provides clear technical and operational governance for the implementation of the Company's Operational Safety Rules used by Operations & Maintenance Teams, Protection engineers, the Control Room and projects. This team is the main point of contact for operational technical decisions and is separate from the traditional Engineering function.

Reflecting the level of reliability and knowledge required of the network, this team is required to cover all critical areas of expertise for effective operation of the SHE Transmission network, in accordance with governing requirements such as the Operational Safety Rules (OSRs) and industry standards such as National Safety Instructions (NSIs). The level of individual expertise will typically be at the level required for a Technical Authority.

The Operations team are responsible for a number of key functions, including:

- Operational approval of design for Projects through the Design Review process and sign off of Design Reviews at all project Gates, including Gate 4 prior to energisation

- Operational approval of technologies proposed for use on the SHE Transmission network, based on independent evaluation of technologies

- Development of, review and authorisation of SHE Transmission Operational Procedures

- Training and authorisation of all staff and contractors who need an operational authorisation to work on the Transmission network

- Maintenance of a Competence Matrix for SHE Transmission Operational Authorisations, which supports maintenance of a sufficiently competent and experienced Operations Team, provides clear succession planning, and provides clear technical career paths in SHE Transmission.

What do I need?

The ideal candidate for this role will have a detailed knowledge of the SHE Transmissions operational standards, specifications and engineering processes. You'll be able to demonstrable an in-depth knowledge and understanding of SHE Transmissions license Obligations and Industry Codes Standards for the design of the Network and connections to the Network including; SSE, National Grid, British and European Operational Standards. A wide range of experience in regard to substation plant, protection, cabling and overhead lines is essential and the necessary technical skills to review understand and overcome performance issues and find engineering solutions.

You'll have previous experience managing teams, projects and programmes with a proven track record of successful delivery of planned operations and maintenance, delivering within challenging timescales; effectively prioritising, planning and organising immediate and long-term business priorities.

You should possess strong communication skills and feel comfortable communicating at all levels and be able to present on a range of technical subjects with the ability to form structured arguments with reasoned justification to influence and guide others. You should possess the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and specifications.
