About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Service Delivery team as a Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Specialist based in either the West or Scotland region.

As a SHE Specialist, you’ll ensure Gas Transmission Operations continue to work within the Legal and National Grid requirements whilst ensuring the highest levels of safety and environmental performance. You’ll work collaboratively to enable improvements to be made/delivered in SHE performance and continuous improvement within Operations.  You’ll embed a robust SHE culture that is consistent across National Grid.

You’ll be required to undertake management of other SHE team members, whilst supporting the Technical SHE Manager to develop the strategy to improve SHE Management Systems and increase demonstrable compliance.

The successful candidate should expect regional/national travel and overnight stays as and when the business requires.

Key Accountabilities 

  • Demonstrate technical knowledge and site based experience of project planning / delivery on major hazard assets
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership, team management, influencing/negotiating, customer orientation and communication skills, providing the ability to support /communicate and effectively develop working relationships with staff at all levels
  • Support the Technical SHE Manager to develop the strategy to improve SHE Management Systems and increase demonstrable compliance.
  • Responsible for determining how changes in National Grid policy may affect Operations activities and to support the Technical SHE Manager to review guidance and roll out revisions in procedures for Operations.
  • Promote a positive SHE culture across all work activities of Operations.
  • Support the Technical SHE Manager to devise and deliver effective communication of changes to SHE working practices.
  • Be responsible for devising a risk based programme of coaching and support to Operations to ensure understanding and review the effectiveness of SHE system implementation.
  • Ensure all staff, within Operations, are suitably supported and informed to enable compliance with National Grid’s SHE management systems, whilst driving continual improvement and meeting Business Unit objectives.
  • Manage the outputs and undertake associated performance reviews of junior staff within the team.
  • Promote a programme to develop, coach, mentor and train (either directly or through service providers) to enable all Operations and SHE team employees to discharge their SHE responsibilities.
  • Provide support to investigating Managers in accordance with National Grid investigation procedures. 
  • Provide practical solutions for the elimination or mitigation of significant hazards and risks.
  • Support the Technical SHE Manager in leading the delivery of technical strategies and continuous improvement

About You

Essential: 

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid current driving license

Desirable: A-Level or equivalent

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge and site based experience of project planning / delivery on major hazard assets
  • Strong IT skills
  • Proven strong communication skills
  • Strong organisational and administrative skill
  • Detailed understanding of either Health and Safety or Environmental Management Systems including ISO14001 and ISO18001 / ISO45001 and internal/external audit processes
  • Detailed understanding of appropriate legislative requirements, company policies and procedures
