About the Department

SSE Airtricity is one of the largest energy retail businesses on the island of Ireland. It offers gas and electricity to both domestic and commercial customers in Northern Ireland and Ireland and has an extensive Home Energy Services business.

The SSE Airtricity Regulation team is responsible for managing and leading SSE Airtricity on interactions with regulators across both Ireland and Northern Ireland, namely the Commission for Regulation of Utilities and Utility Regulator.

We represent the business at industry fora, lead the development of responses to regulatory changes and advocate for our positions with both regulators on the island of Ireland.

We also work collaboratively with industry to develop common positions on regulatory matters which may impact our business. These interactions can vary from responding to the formation of new policy, new market framework changes and code or dealing with information requests when required.

Internally, we provide regulatory advice and guidance to the business across all regulatory aspects ranging from industry codes, licence requirements, and regulatory policy.

What is the Role

Reporting to your manager, this role focuses on providing guidance to the business on regulatory requirements that impact the business. You will be responsible for understanding regulatory requirements, identifying how they may impact the business and ensuring that relevant business units are aware of these requirements. As a senior member of the team, you will assist your manager in identifying advocacy opportunities for the business and provide solutions based proposals where possible.

Externally you will be responsible for representing the business in industry fora, and for communicating our views on regulatory proposals in an impactful way. This will require you to build consensus internally and ensure that management is briefed on key issues regularly so as to develop coherent and precise regulatory responses.

As a subject matter expert in retail regulation, you will be focused on ensuring outcomes-based approaches to your work and be a responsible and motivated self-starter, capable of balancing and managing multiple agendas simultaneously.

What do I need?

Ideal candidates will hold a degree level qualification in economics, finance, business, law or a related subject. Experience working within a sectoral regulator or utility company of at least 3 years is required.

We look for candidates who are effective and impactful communicators, both written and oral. Candidates will demonstrate that they can communicate clearly, concisely and with confidence and should be able to demonstrate that their communications are targeted at the right audience for maximum impact.

A strong analytical capability; with a demonstrated understanding of regulation, policy and related aspects such as economic analysis is a requirement, in particular given our role in supporting the business in the implementation of our Northern Ireland gas price control.

Candidates will be naturally curious with the capacity to develop independent ideas on how we approach our work in the team. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to identify new advocacy opportunities for the business and work with their manager to promote these opportunities.
