About the Department
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks forms part of the SSE group. We are responsible for maintaining the electricity distribution and transmission networks north of the central belt of Scotland and the distribution network across Central Southern England - keeping the lights on for over 3.8million homes and businesses.
What is the Role?
As a Retained Switcher for the Island of Colonsay, you will be responsible for supporting the work carried out by our Distribution business across the North and West of Scotland and ensuring that our Network continues to run effectively.
This will involve being part of a unique task force dedicated to looking after our customers and keeping the lights on through swift reaction and rectification of faults on the network within the Island of Colonsay. This includes assisting during busy storm periods as well as during normal high demand periods of work.
This role can be demanding; you will be required to respond quickly to emergency situations, and you'll face plenty of challenges - including the weather, but the rewards are as numerous as the opportunities.
The role is being offered on a retained basis meaning that we would pay you £150 per month. If and when there is a fault and a power cut occurs, then we would pay you £14.77 per hour for each hour that we need your support. This tends to be during storms and can mean some weeks/months you will work zero hours. Due to the nature of the role, you will need to be permanently based on the Island of Colonsay.
What do I need?
A basic knowledge of electricity along with the ability to demonstrate high safety standards is crucial and although full training for the role will be provided, you will be expected to adhere to all Electrical & Safety Safe Systems of Work and Procedures and pass a High Voltage switching course.
You must have the will to work in the worst of weather as you will be expected to work outdoors in all-weather conditions. A high level of manual dexterity is essential, and you must have the ability to recognise risk and put control measures against the hazards perceived. You will have excellent communication skills and must have a full UK driving license with access to a vehicle.
