About the Department
Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.
What is the Role?
SSE Transmission has a great opportunity for an experienced OHL Project Engineer to provide OHL technical support to a variety of projects from conception through to completion.
This is a unique opportunity to work with a project portfolio which includes a mixture of innovative development and delivery projects. The projects will contribute to reinforcing and expanding SHE Transmission's network to continue to serve its customers and facilitate additional renewable generation and a transition to net zero
The OHL Project Engineer will be responsible for undertaking design assessments on network reinforcement options including new build and refurbishment OHLs; reviewing contractor/consultants detailed designs and witnessing FATs. You should have demonstrable experience of routing and design of transmission lines using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS -TOWER.
This role gives you the chance to work with a diverse range of teams within the Transmission business, such as Project Management, System Planning, Operations, Procurement etc to ensure that thorough engineering practise and innovation are incorporated into designs currently being developed as part of our £2.2 billion RIIO-T2 plan.

What do I need?
The OHL Project Engineer must have a degree in an Engineering discipline or HND or equivalent experience in a similar role. You will have strong knowledge of the technical functions and engineering processes in Transmission along with an appreciation of legal and regulatory obligations. Thorough understanding of legislation and the implications for the Transmission network management for both Assets and Projects, including CDM and ESQCR is required.
Knowledge of following overhead line activities is essential to be considered:
- Overhead line Plan and profile drawings
- Basic Understanding on selection of various overhead line components
- Overhead line Wire clearance, Tower and fittings drawings
- An appreciation of the factors impacting load and strength on an OHL.
