About the Department

Our Asset Management team consists of Asset Risk Management and Equipment Specification. They are involved in running a programme of projects exploring new technologies and commercial arrangements across network activities and identifying practical solutions. They are also involved in operating some of the new solutions that have been developed by the innovation team. The project portfolio is predominantly funded by the Low Carbon Network Fund or the Network Innovation Allowance which requires considerable management and governance to ensure compliance.

What is the Role?

As a Network Designer, you will primarily be responsible for completing design work from an initial high-level scope through to detailed installation/costing design for underground cable, overhead line, network refurbishment, network automation, plant replacement and various network alteration schemes. Based on a business need, you may also work on other work streams as required.

Your design will also require you to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate the health and safety as required in the projects pre-construction phase. This includes line route designs, stage by stage plans, plant and installation specifications, tendering and tender evaluation. This will ensure the network is constructed robustly and cost effectively whilst eliminating health, safety and financial risks during an assets lifecycle.

You will work as part of a team to provide value engineered designs requiring you to liaise with customers, land agents, local authorities and SSE colleagues to achieve a fit for purpose design.

What do I need?

Educated to HNC level (as a minimum) within a relevant subject, you will have experience in the design and construction of electrical distribution networks from upto 33kV. Experience in this field with a DNO or a supplier to the industry would also be advantageous. A working knowledge of Microsoft office and previous experience in applying the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 to technically complex projects are essential. In addition, knowledge of electrical network modelling and the NRSWA code of practice would be advantageous, although full training will be provided.

You will have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, being capable of building lasting relationships with stakeholders internal, external and at all levels. As a result of this, you'll have first class communication skills, both verbal and written. You will also have strong negotiation and influencing skills, being able to convey your position in a clear and concise manner.
