The Engineering Design Team support the regional construction, supply restoration and new connections teams across three regions in the North of Scotland area by producing a coordinated and coherent detailed design for a range of schemes on the 33KV, 11KV and LV networks. To ensure that this continues to run efficiently and effectively, we have an excellent opportunity to join us as a Network Designer, based in either of our Aberdeen, Inverness or Perth Depots.

About the Department

At Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) our skilled teams operate and maintain our electricity distribution and transmission networks, comprising some 123,000 substations and 127,000km of overhead lines and underground cables, distributing electricity to 3.7 million homes and businesses in the North of Scotland and Southern England.

Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power.

What is the Role

As a Network Designer, you will primarily be responsible for completing design work from an initial high-level scope through to detailed installation/costing design for underground cable, overhead line, network refurbishment, network automation, plant replacement and various network alteration schemes. Based on a business need, you may also work on other work streams as required.

Your design will also require you to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate the health and safety as required in the projects pre-construction phase. This includes line route designs, stage by stage plans, plant and installation specifications, tendering and tender evaluation. This will ensure the network is constructed robustly and cost effectively whilst eliminating health, safety and financial risks during an assets lifecycle.

You will work as part of a team to provide value engineered designs requiring you to liaise with customers, land agents, local authorities and SSE colleagues to achieve a fit for purpose design

What do I need?

Educated to HNC level (as a minimum) within a relevant subject, you will have experience in the design and construction of electrical distribution networks from LV to 33kV. Experience in this field with a DNO or a supplier to the industry would also be advantageous. A working knowledge of Microsoft office and previous experience in applying the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 to technically complex projects is essential. In addition knowledge of electrical network modelling and the NRSWA code of practice would be advantageous, although full training will be provided.

You will have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, being capable of building lasting relationships with stakeholders internal, external and at all levels. As a result of this, you'll have first class communication skills, both verbal and written. You will also have strong negotiation and influencing skills, being able to convey your position in a clear and concise manner.

You will be required to work quickly, accurately and independently whilst working to tight timescales providing first class customer service; therefore, the ability to thrive under pressure will be crucial to your success with a willingness to work flexibly and assist other team members. It is also important that you have an eye on long term development and are able to identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements.

You must also be willing to help the region with customer service and supply restoration emergencies out of hours. A full UK driving licence is required as you will be travelling to different sites and there may be occasions where an overnight stay is required.

You will require a full and current driving license.

Interviews are scheduled to be held in Perth on 12 December 2019 and Inverness on 18 December 2019.
