About the Department
At Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), our skilled teams operate and maintain our electricity distribution and transmission networks, carrying electricity to over 3.7 million homes across the north of the Central Belt of Scotland and Central Southern England. Our customers are served by over 4,000 employees based in major offices and depots across the regions we operate in including Reading, Portsmouth, Perth and Inverness. Our mission is to power our community, and wed like you to join our journey.
What is the Role?
As a Network Connections Designer, you'll be helping to ensure Guaranteed Standards are met when providing quotations for new connections for customers. By providing customers with designs and quotations for both import and export connections to our network, you ensure we are delivering the highest level of service.
Your projects will be varied, and will involve large housing and industrial developments, with capacities in excess of 250kVA. The capacities you will design will predominantly be between 250kVA and 10MW and will connect to the 11kV network. Projects may also include the connection of distributed generation equipment, under Engineering Recommendation Document G99 as well as larger demand projects connecting to the 33kV and 132kV network directly.
An ability to model and analyse 11kV network to accommodate points of connection for generation as well as demand customers will be necessary to be considered for this role. Due to the regulated nature of our business, all timescales set for our connections projects are heavily monitored, and therefore must be produced and issued to customers within the Guaranteed Standards timescales. In line with regulation, all our designs must be compliant with all appropriate rules and regulations in place, as well as meeting all engineering specifications and financial targets.
What do I need?
To ensure you get the most from your role, you'll have excellent working knowledge of both low and high voltage distribution and Power Systems networks, with an ability to create designs which promote safety throughout. If you have a relevant electrical qualification that would be great, however equivalent work experience is also accepted.
You'll be a strong communicator, with excellent organisation skills and a strength in developing and nourishing positive working relationships. You'll have the opportunity to visit your clients, therefore, a valid UK driving licence is also required. If you have experience with PROMIS, GIS and SIMS technology that's a bonus, but if not, you should have a flair for picking up and working with new IT systems. Finally, you'll have a special appreciation for safety, and ensuring our safety values are at the forefront of your working.
We're committed to ensuring we offer our people a great place to work, with competitive salary, contributory pension plan and benefits package. Why not watch our short employee benefits video to see what else is on offer?
