About the Department
Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power.
What is the Role?
We have islands off the West and North Coast of Scotland that are supplied by submarine cables. These islands have an embedded Diesel Power Station which acts as an emergency supply when faults occur. It is within our Power Station at Loch Carnan, South Uist that an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Fitter.
As a Mechanical Fitter you will be responsible for performing routine maintenance, undertaking fault finding and repairs on the fixed installations of the power stations, as well as planning and organising maintenance work and assisting with general day to day tasks within the stations. You'll also undertake the duties of a "unit operator" and form part of the team to operate the stations during planned and unplanned outages. Full training will be provided for this.
As part of the company ethos you may be asked to carry out duties outwith your main core skills but within your capabilities, therefore, a degree of flexibility is required. Although your main base will be Loch Carnan Power Station, the team based there are also responsible for the maintenance of Barra and Tiree Power Stations therefore there will be a requirement for regular travel to these sites and infrequently to others within the Embedded Power Station group including Lewis, Islay, Orkney and Shetland.
What do I need?
To be successful in this role, you will be able to call on your skills associated with Mechanical plant maintenance, of which experience on large marine diesels will be an advantage and associated ancillary plant and equipment and be competent in the use of small hand tools. Good team working skills are essential. Successful candidate would also be required to show a positive attitude towards health and safety in the workplace. Knowledge and experience of electrical systems and/or Commercial/Safety/Quality Awareness would be an advantage, however not considered essential for the role.
