About the Department
SSE has a vision to be a leading energy provider in a low-carbon world and achieving this is dependent on a strategy of delivering value to shareholders and society from developing, operating and owning energy and related infrastructure and services in a sustainable way.
In line with this vision, SSE Renewables (SSER) was established in 2019 to develop, build and operate a renewable generation portfolio both in the UK and Internationally, significantly expanding our Renewable portfolio which currently includes pumped storage, conventional hydro, offshore wind and onshore wind. Within SSER, the Engineering & Innovation Centre of Excellence plays a significant role in the delivery of SSEs multi £billion investment programme and operation of 4GW of Renewable generation capacity. We provide expertise across a wide range of engineering and technical disciplines to ensure best practice project delivery and asset management whilst achieving a competitive advantage through value engineering and innovation.
Reporting to the Technology Manager, the Lead Technology Engineer will be responsible for delivering future value by conceiving, designing and leading early stage projects. You will liaise with both internal and external stakeholders, to improve the competitiveness of SSERs development and operational projects.
You will lead multi-disciplinary teams across the business on early stage concept development, eliciting input from appropriate Technical Authorities for technical support, independent expert opinion and as a channel to supply chain partners.
The role will include establishing strong working relations with other departments at all levels within SSER to understand and develop opportunities and tackle challenges that the departments are experiencing, through the application of technology.
You will be responsible for negotiating and concluding collaboration agreements with external parties with input from the Legal and Commercial teams and the end customer within SSER.
Knowledge, skills and experience
To be considered for this role you should have technical discipline experience relevant to renewable power generation and broad technical knowledge in offshore wind and preferably onshore wind and/or hydroelectricity. Demonstrable experience of leading, managing and scoping research and development activities and an understanding of the commercial context and implications of engineering activities and decisions are required.
A background in concept design work, optioneering studies and cost benefit analyses is also essential as is the skill to evaluate concepts and proposals relating to novel technology.
You will have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, securing resources where needed from other parts of SSER or corporate functions and have the confidence and experience in dealing with the significant ambiguity and uncertainty inherent in early stage concepts and projects whilst securing commercial value for the business.
We need candidates who are skilled at identifying inherent assumptions, testing and challenging their validity who have high organisational capabilities to deliver quality work to agreed timescales.
Please be aware if you are successful, you'll be required to complete our pre-employment screening process before joining SSE.
