About the Department

Energy Customer Solutions is the face of SSE to our customers in GB and Ireland, providing leading and reliable B2B services as well as leading retail solutions for our B2C customers.

The purpose of the team is to support the business with innovation development by acquiring third party funding to support the development of new products and build value for the business of the future. The purpose of the team is to deliver insights which help the business achieve targets such as; optimising profits, reducing costs, reducing customer churn, increasing product holding and optimising customer experience and understanding the emerging Mega trends in the industry.

What is the Role

The Innovation Manager role is responsible for increasing access to public sector grant funding in pursuit of SSEs strategic business objectives. The type of services provided by the team include creation of:

-Innovation and new business model analysis

-Finance analysis, budgets and forecasts

-Stakeholder management

-Innovation programme delivery - manage the end to end delivery of the relevant projects

The Innovation Manager will be focused on targets and requirements, with an ability to be adaptable to meet changing business environments. Reports on progress to senior management Business Sponsor or relevant Director.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

-Project Lifecycle - opportunity scoping and development

Opportunity assessment involves: review of funding opportunities against SSE priorities to assess whether the business should apply for external funding; close liaison with SSE business units to inform them of the funding availability and developing well informed briefing notes for senior management to secure approval to proceed. The Development phase requires the establishment and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams to develop a best-in-class funding application, often requiring close liaison with government grant bodies. Refinement involves detailed negotiation with funders and ensuring both financial and legal compliance with funding offers.

-Develop and Maintain Specialist Grant Funding Knowledge

Keeping up to date with funding opportunities as they arise from a range of sources. Knowledge of European funding. Sound expertise in funding compliance, state aid and legal procurement requirements are required.

-Leading Grant Funding Applications

Leading, advising and supporting the business on development of funding applications involving: expert bid writing capability; advising on resource requirements and project financing; coordinating multidisciplinary teams and, crucially, often working to tight deadlines. The aim is to ensure the highest quality, compliant bids are submitted thereby maintaining SSEs best-in-class high success rate.

-Communication - Shaping and Influencing

Presenting new opportunities to key internal stakeholders will regularly be required. Engaging proactively and positively with public sector funding bodies and key suppliers to influence and shape the success of specific projects

-Compliance and Finance

Ensuring successful projects maintain financial claims compliance in accordance with the governing body. Assist the business with adopting the correct relevant financial reporting documentation to auditing standards in accordance with the issuing funding body. Sound knowledge of procurement and state aid legislation will be required or need developed.

-Emerging Technologies and Market trends

Ensuring the business is up to speed on current market trends and build awareness with key business stakeholders. Develop business cases and models to develop new projects and propositions.

-Technical - multidisciplinary

This is not directly a technical role. The role will involve development of comprehensive project bids involving multi-disciplinary teams which include both internal and external parties across finance; engineering and policy.

What do I need?

-Experience in RD&D and innovation projects within Energy Industry.

-Sound understanding of public sector funding sources and experience of and a success rate in securing public funding for projects

-Understanding of project life-cycle from concept through delivery to completion and understanding of project finance and funding compliance issues

-Knowledge of how the energy sector functions

-Establish and maintain highly effective relationships within projects and other project and business teams to ensure that interfaces work correctly

-Development and Management of 3rd parties, acting as a routine contact point between organisation and supplier

-Manage projects to ensure that resultant processes / systems/services deliver the specified objectives, within budget and timescale

-Understand reputational and political drivers affecting energy utilities

-Well-developed communication skills including a high standard of written work and confident presentation skills

-Leadership skills; ability to coordinate work across teams with diverse interests
