About the Department
Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.
What is the Role?
SSE Transmission currently has a vacancy for an HVDC Engineer. This role is having been created to define HVDC engineering basis of design and scope for cables systems (AC and DC), validating and verifying the engineering design, construction, installation and commissioning, within a specialist technical discipline for assigned HVDC project(s) on land and subsea for cable systems.
The role will provide ongoing technical support to HVDC asset (Caithness Moray HVDC) to support HVDC Operations Manager in resolution of HVDC asset related technical issues and review of HVDC cable maintenance and inspection schedules, plans and RAMS. A HVDC cable systems Engineer will deliver work in their specialist discipline to required quality and programme, ensuring all data and specialist input is complete and validated, and that deliverables are complete and checked.
The HVDC cable systems Engineers should have the knowledge to refer technical matters out with their experience to the Senior HVDC Cable Systems Engineer, Technical team and relevant Subject Matter Experts (SME). HVDC cable systems Engineers are expected to promote best practice within their discipline through suggested improvements in specifications, technology options, management of technical risks and continued professional development.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role you will have a degree in appropriate engineering discipline or equivalent experience but will consider degree in other discipline with experience of onshore and offshore cable works. You will be expected to have strong technical knowledge of HVDC Operations including ongoing land and subsea cable survey and maintenance activities. You will have good technical knowledge of the Transmission network, with technical understanding of core elements, and high-level technical understanding of facilitating functions.
Your technical knowledge should encompass relevant legislation and the implications for Transmission network management for both Assets and Projects, including CDM & ESQCR and SHET and industry standards and specifications for cable systems and knowledge in core HVDC cable discipline, with knowledge of all technical functions of HVDC and AC disciplines in FACTS.
The skill to communicate complex technical issues in a clear and concise manner to facilitate decision making by senior management and be able to independently produce detailed design deliverables or support the peer review of work by others through first principles or specialist tools/software.
Within the role you will spend time offshore during extended cable burial campaigns, offshore training will be provided, and previous offshore experience will beneficial.
You'll have thorough understanding of other Departments and strong relationships with Projects, Operations and strong knowledge of legal and regulatory obligations for SHET Transmission, good understanding of cable asset commitments to Marine Scotland. Youll also have detailed knowledge of CDM and LCP governance and engineering processes and a comprehensive understanding of and strong relationships with consultants, HVDC OEM, external industry experts and key stakeholders.
