About the Department
SSE Human Resources is made up of several operational and specialist teams who strive to help the business to design, develop and deliver their people strategies. We partner with the business to provide expert advice on all people matters, enabling them to get the best out of their teams and equip them to meet the changing demands of our business now, and in the future.
The introduction of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) in 2018 brought stricter governance on the gathering, use, storage and ultimate disposal of data. To meet these challenges HR has a small team of two Data Protection Specialists to ensure HR and the wider company are compliant when handling employee data.
What is the Role
The main purpose of this role is to be a specialist advisor on GDPR and Information Security across HR and also in business areas where employee data is handled to ensure compliance with the regulations. Advising HR and the wider SSE on how to apply the regulations in practical terms when holding and utilising employee personal data. The role holder will work closely with the Legal Data Protection team and with the wider network of Data Protection Specialists within each business unit. There is a dotted line between this role in HR and the Legal Data Protection team, this means that the legal team offer training and guidance as required and oversee and agree the ultimate scope of work for all Data Protection Specialists.
This is a highly responsible role that is a broad and varied and involves the consideration of multiple and often complex factors in order to make well informed decisions on behalf of HR and the business.
What do I need?
You will need to understand how Human Resources and the wider SSE business operates as well as an understanding of the variety and extend of HR, policies, processes and documentation involving personal data wherever it exists in the company.
You should have knowledge of SSE governance, risk and control framework; of SSEs key data protection policies and related control procedures and awareness of the Information Security governance and controls frameworks.
In depth knowledge of the management of Subject Access Requests and data protection incidents is also required as well as an appetite to challenge thinking and lead discussions on Data Protection and Information Security at all levels of the organisation from a position of knowledge and experience.
It would be beneficial for the successful candidate to have extensive knowledge of the key requirements of the GDPR in relation to handling of employee data as well as experience of the practical implementation of Data Protection policies and procedures including training and awareness.
You will have an ability to build effective relationships across all levels of the organisation and to influence at all levels within the organisation through both personal impact or local argument.
