About the Department

SSE operates the largest Street Lighting Contracting business in the UK, maintaining in excess of 1 million lighting units and associated cable works for various clients including Councils, Developers and the Highway Authority Motorway and Trunk Road works.

What is the Role?

Due to the scale of this contract, we have an opportunity for an additional Level 2 Highway Lighting Operative to join the team in Leeds and assist in these works.

You'll work as part of a team undertaking installation, maintenance and routine work for a full range of highway lighting apparatus including street lighting columns, lanterns, brackets, poles and signs. This is a physically demanding role which will involve you working outdoors, on public highways and at heights. You'll also be required to form part of a call out rota to attend to emergencies outside of normal working hours as required.

What Do I Need? 

To be successful, you'll be able to drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes - an HGV licence is therefore vital as use of a HIAB will be involved. Previous experience of the Street Lighting industry/Civils works, operating machinery, working on the highway and at height is preferable, as well as a full understanding of utility drawings and the dangers of damaging underground services.

Safety is our number one priority and you must be confident to act on your own initiative in all situations. Candidates with IPAF MEWP operation training or experience of working in the vicinity of electrical services G39 will be given preference.
