SSE's Hydro fleet plays a key role in meeting SSE's low carbon targets. The Hydro power stations were predominantly built during the 1950s and 1960s and are an integral part of Scotland's national infrastructure. These assets provide much more than just renewable energy through the management of water, enhancing the local ecology and providing economic benefits to the Highlands through jobs and tourism. SSE led the hydro revolution in Scotland and today our teams continue to adapt and evolve in an increasingly complex environment, ensuring all assets are operated efficiently and responsibly to support the Nations low carbon energy needs.

What is the Role?

This is a unique opportunity to lead Hydro ensuring Hydro maintains its place at the centre of the renewable industry through the continued evolution creation and management of a structure that delivers on-going value to support investment, whilst ensuring the longevity of the business to continue delivering future value. As the Head of our Hydro Operations business, our expert team of c180 geographically dispersed employees will look to you to bring an authentic leadership style to encourage innovation, modernise our practices and drive an open, safe culture.

Through your in-depth operational knowledge and understanding of the varied, wide portfolio of hydro assets under your management, you'll be comfortable managing complex activities within hazardous environments driving high levels of excellence and performance. whilst balancing business risks. We are a responsible owner and operator, we take our role seriously and always place the safety of our people, assets and communities we operate in as our highest priority and ensure we contribute to the continued improvement of the local ecology.

In addition, you'll have considerable budget responsibilities of c£25m controllable costs and EBIT targets of c£300m. Through successfully managing people, performance and assets whist simultaneously securing value, challenging costs and delivering efficiencies you'll be a critical member of the SSER leadership community, working collaboratively to support and influence the broader Renewables business, and drive value for the company.

What do I need?

Essential to this role will be your understanding of the electricity market, and extensive knowledge and experience within complex operational environments. You'll have an engineering degree and/or equivalent knowledge to understand and manage operational risks and opportunities. Ability to work across the full breadth of operational and technical aspects of the business is essential.

A commercially astute leader, you'll possess strong business skills appropriate to such a large, profitable business, and will have the combined technical and communication skills in order to effectively manage, engage and utilise the expertise across our Hydro engineering teams. Our operations run all year round, so you'll need to be flexible and adaptable to act at very short notice, comfortable being decisive and able to mobilise and motivate your team.

Well also need you to have: -

- A clear focus on safety, and a proven track record of incorporating a safety culture in a complex environment.

- Asset management experience with electricity generation, transmission and distribution technology

- The ability to engage, motivate and manage a large skilled workforce in technical operational environment.

- Highly accomplished communication and leadership skills

- Proven business capability with strong financial and commercial skills

- Ability to engage, listen to, support and influence regulators, agencies and other stakeholders, knowing the compromises to make.

- Resilience, resourcefulness and ability to influence at all levels, including MD and board level on decisions which can impact the bottom line.

- Ability to initiate, drive and run large scale, complex projects worth several million pounds.

- Ability to balance compliance against practicable application - deliver efficiency with the focus on risk management
