About the Department
SSEN owns two Distribution Network Operators (DNO): Southern Electric Power Distribution and Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution. SSEN is actively progressing the transition for each DNO to perform the role of Distribution System Operator (DSO). In the move to low carbon technology and maximum choice and flexibility for system users and customers, the success of this transition is critical to the future of the business.
Within DSO, we have several different departments which include System and Network Planning, Pricing and Forecasting, Operational Technology and our Control Rooms (North & South).
What is the Role?
We have an excellent opportunity for a commercially aware individual to join our System Planning team within our Scottish and Southern Electricity Network (SSEN) business. In this role you'll be providing the business with technical expertise regarding all aspects of network flexibility and smart solutions, including their operations and the operational technology aspect, to ensure compliance with distribution network requirements. You'll be required to co-ordinate with Service Providers, perform risk analyses, and assess network performance with these flexible solutions and make recommendations for improvements to meet the current and future requirements of our network.
Your technical experience will be invaluable as you manage technical assessments, collection and interpretation of large volumes of complex network, service providers and costs data, and present this in an easily digestible format for internal and external stakeholders and regulators, including OFGEM.
For Connections & Diversion customer enquiries on reinforcement decisions, you'll provide technical expertise at meetings with large commercial and industrial clients and consultant to resolve complaints and drive improvements.
You'll also be required to confidently represent SSEN as a technical expert at UK-wide industry forums and working parties and contribute to the development of new/revised Engineering Recommendations and Engineering Technical Reports.
What do I need?
You will be degree qualified or have equivalent experience and essential to this role will be your technical understanding of distribution networks, and ability to carry out complex network assessment and can demonstrate the following skills:
- The ability of interpret large volumes of complex data and display in a digestible format to stakeholders.
- Ability to identify flexibility/smart solutions, assess risks and conduct high-level market tests.
- Experience of embedding and promoting a safety culture.
- Financial management and commercially astute.
- Excellent communication skills, and able to engage with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external.
