About the Department
The drive to decarbonisation is set to drastically alter the way in which energy systems are managed. The economic and environmental challenges mean that society needs new solutions, including renewable energy, electric vehicles, heat networks, community energy and energy storage plus the markets to make these solutions financeable.
This change is altering the role of distribution electrical networks, meaning more focus on whole energy system economics and markets. The network becomes a means of exchanging and trading energy in a way that makes best use of the available generation, with multi directional energy flows, within the physical limits of the network.
What is the Role?
Your key responsibility will be to evaluate, develop, implement, grow and monitor a healthy portfolio of procured flexibility, from distributed energy resources. Taking into consideration the impact of evolving trading platforms at distribution level. The development of flexibility markets in distribution applications is at the cutting edge of developments, and you will be responsible for the ongoing development of the commercial and engagement aspects of the flexibility portfolio, keeping SSEN at the leading edge of DNOs utilising flexibility effectively.
There will be the requirement to provide the business with an ongoing view of the optionality value, efficiencies and combined risk of the flexibility portfolio to inform and evidence decision making. This will include cost benefit analysis and risk management, detailed financial modelling for a wide range of new and innovative business models utilising flexibility and new services as alternatives to traditional investment. These models will need to be constructed and evolve to reflect how these new solutions deliver benefits for SSEN informing RIIO-ED2.
The role will focus on the Oxfordshire Programme while systematically applying knowledge, learning and methods from LEO (Local Energy Oxford) to the core business programmes such as Constraint Managed Zones.
You will also be required to:
- Promote SSENs Safety Values
- Provide financial analysis of Flexible Options
- Provide specifications of Commercial Contract Framework for deployment of Flexibility Services
- Provide flexibility Portfolio Management
- Inform ED2
- Develop economic analysis for Wider DSO Transition
- Directly engage and undertake contractual negotiation with third parties providing flexibility services
- Market design to coordinate with other currently available and future energy services
What do I need?
The ideal candidate for this role will have a range of experience across the energy industry gained from working in various roles with a good knowledge of the electricity distribution and transmission networks, energy markets and pricing. An excellent understanding of energy economics and financial market modelling techniques will be required to evidence key decisions. Experience of the mechanisms of existing energy markets across the UK energy mix would be beneficial, along with a comprehensive understanding of network codes, regulatory mechanisms for networks, and network charging arrangements. Established knowledge of connections commercial agreements and GBSO service provisions would be an advantage.
Excellent communications skills will be required, and you'll be comfortable representing SSEN on DSO related matters at Industry Forums, including public presentations. You will hold a qualification in either Economics, Finance, Accountancy or related discipline and as the role of DSO evolves have the natural curiosity to seek out innovative proposals for new market mechanisms. You will be comfortable with ambiguity and complexity and driven to succeed.
