SSE Enterprise comprises three companies: Contracting, Telecoms and Distributed Energy. SSE Enterprise Utilities is part of the Distributed Energy business of SSE plc. Distributed Energy offers a full range of services which contribute to the development of smart cities and smart places, in both public and private sectors. We finance, own, operate and maintain a broad portfolio, from electrical vehicle (EV) infrastructure, to distributed energy systems including renewable and low-carbon generation, energy storage and heat networks as well as building owning and adopting private HV networks. SSE Enterprise Utilities is the Distributed Energy and Private Networks business of SSE plc. We finance, own, operate and maintain energy infrastructure for commercial, industrial and residential customers - providing them with a market leading project development service and certainty of operational performance and asset management.
What is the Role?
The Engineering Solutions function within the Operations directorate of Distributed Energy holds accountability for ensuring that projects across our business are developed safely, efficiently, and comply with the engineering standards that we also set and maintain for the businesses.

As an Engineer in Gas Design, you'll work within an exciting, challenging and growing area of the SSE Enterprise business, supporting and undertaking the development of design for natural gas distribution projects for a variety of customers, in compliance with the relevant legislation and design standards.
You will apply your skills and experience in helping the Engineering Solutions team provide expert advice, first-class innovation and reliable support throughout the Distributed Energy business as well as supporting the development of others.
We will support your personal development as you work to develop innovative engineering solutions to successfully optimise scope, cost, programme and risk for projects, considering health, safety, and the environment throughout.
You will play a crucial role in delivering high quality design standards and supporting the emerging Distributed Energy market, and in doing so, driving business growth.
What do I need?
The Gas Design Engineer will be a highly motivated individual, with very effective written and spoken communication skills with the confidence in presenting to others. You will be an exceptional team player, able to work independently, and resourceful in ensuring delivery against agreed deadlines for a wide range of activities.
You will be a collaborator; someone who can understand others and engage stakeholders in an effective way and have the drive to develop yourself and others.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience of working in a design and development environment within the energy industry as well as knowledge in working with engineering standards and specifications. Therefore, a background in Gas Design, with a broad technical knowledge is desirable and you should be competent to operate within the GIRS design submission and approval process.
To be considered for the role you should be a qualified Engineer to HNC, degree or equivalent certification level and preferably a Chartered/Incorporated Engineer but this is not essential. You'll have a track record in delivering design engineering, ideally through the RIBA Stages requirements. You will have a strong understanding of the energy industry and regulations and thorough knowledge of the UK Electricity distribution structure and regulations. It would be beneficial to have a good understanding of the structure of the SSE Group, SSE Enterprise business, our customers, and our role within the industry too.
