About the Department
SSE's Audit, Risk and Assurance teams are responsible for supporting the SSE Group in meeting their risk management responsibilities, ensuring that we meet our obligations under the UK Corporate Governance Code. We undertake assurance reviews right across the business to help identify any risks that may impact our performance, integrity, solvency or liquidity, and offer appropriate recommendations to help mitigate these.
What is the Role?
This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished senior leader to join us to take overall accountability for the Group Risk and Group Audit functions. Reporting to the Group FD and working closely with members of the Group Executive Committee (GEC), SSE Board and the external Audit Committee, you'll be responsible for ensuring SSE meets our Risk Management obligations under the UK Corporate Governance Code. This will involve taking a proactive role in ensuring and promoting the highest level of corporate governance and responsibility throughout the Group, chairing or attending relevant committees as appropriate.
Protecting the assets, reputation and sustainability of the organisation will be central to your role. You'll need to build effective relationships with Business Directors, enabling them to understand and meet their risk management responsibilities. You'll use your sound knowledge of best practice in risk and audit management to confidently engage with stakeholders across the business, influencing strategy and translating this into actionable programmes, opportunities or activities to improve risk mitigation.
Ensuring you consider both current and future risks, you'll see the big picture to design and report on the Group's Risk Management Programme. You'll take overall accountability for the delivery of an annual plan of risk prioritised audit work, at all times ensuring that your functions maintain appropriate independence to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. What do I need?
Essential to this role is demonstrable experience of designing, developing and embedding both a comprehensive, Group-wide risk management programme; and comprehensive fit-for-purpose, risk-based internal audit plans. You'll also bring detailed knowledge and awareness of the requirements of the UK Corporate Governance Code and associated Financial Reporting Council (FRC) guidelines.
With your prior experience operating at a senior level, you'll have well developed interpersonal and facilitation skills and the ability to confidently interact with executive level stakeholders, presenting at GEC, Audit Committee and Board level. You'll have excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to effectively articulate risk management and control concepts and issues to help embed understanding and promote accountability within the business. Having an accomplished and high performing team will be critical to your success, therefore you'll bring proven leadership skills and the ability to motivate and develop both the Group Audit and the Group Risk Teams. Operating in a challenging, complex and multi-locational environment, you'll ensure they provide a 'best in class' service, fair and balanced challenge and ultimately value to key stakeholders.
