About the Department

At Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), our skilled teams operate and maintain our electricity distribution and transmission networks, carrying electricity to over 3.7 million homes across the north of the Central Belt of Scotland and Central Southern England.

Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power.

What is the Role?

In this hands-on role, you'll be responsible for safely working to NRSWA street act regulations and carrying out the safe digging and excavating of sites in order to lay cable and help to build and maintain our electricity network. You will be responsible for digging, excavating and exposing live cables as well and laying new plant and network on behalf of the networks team. Ensuring that all work is carried out safely and to a quality standard adhering to the code of Practice and assisting the business in reducing contractor expenditure. You'll work as part of a team, working in highways and private sites where necessary to maintain our distribution network, ensuring good team communication and that safe working practices are always adhered to.

Working outside in all weather conditions, to strict timescales, your work must comply with regulations we abide by, and you'll be able to deliver excellent customer service where reactive maintenance is required. This is a physically demanding role, involving extensive digging works on the highway and private land. Working closely with your manager, you may also be asked to assist with other ad hoc projects and there will be a requirement to join our standby rota.

What do I need?

To be successful in this role, ideally you will have some experience with operating an Excavator and working within utility services.

It would be beneficial to have experience working on public highways involving setting up and taking down chapter 8 and 2-way temporary traffic signals to the code of practice and working alongside good teams within SSE and alongside grab lorries. An HGV license would be desirable, however not essential.

Due to the requirements of this role, a full UK driving license is required, a license with a towing entitlement and also a Excavator Certificate would be needed to apply.
