About the Department
SSE Business Energy supply electricity, gas and related services to business customers in Great Britain. We are part of the Energy Customer Solutions business unit along with our colleagues in Airtricity who supply energy and services to homes and businesses across Ireland.
What is the Role?
The main purpose of the role is to support the Business Energy Leadership Team manage the portfolio of large capital IT and transformation projects (Core Platform Replacement, Smart Metering, and Ofgem Switching Programme) and other transformational work such as separation from the domestic Retail business that was recently sold to Ovo. The role is to work with multiple stakeholders and project directors to ensure delivery and project effectiveness across a complex series of related projects, managing interdependencies and allocating resources to support prioritised opportunities. Providing assurance that the portfolio of projects will meet operational and strategic objectives. Reporting in to the BE Head of Projects & Change, the role would link with the BE Leadership Team to get an understanding of the business wide activity. The role would also contribute to the Business Energy Strategic Transformation (BEST) executive steering group that governs all the projects.
Portfolio Governance and Resource planning
-BEST Portfolio governance - Preparation of governance materials, reporting, papers and presentations, for internal approvals to BEST Board and Group Executive Committee.
-Resource planning - Reviewing and proposing the appropriate business resourcing structure (Business resource alignment to key projects); recommending resourcing levels for the near, medium and long term for successful portfolio delivery.
-Cross portfolio business resourcing to identify constraints and pinch points ahead of time.
-Working with the CPR planner and BE Change Team to agree clarity of responsibilities for resource co-ordination, planning, forecasting and tracking.
-Participating in the Target Operating Model for Business Energy and assisting with the execution of the agreed Target Operating Model aligned to BE and Energy Customer Solutions strategy.
-Recommending an operating model for long term regulatory and industry change management within Business Energy in conjunction with the BE Head of Projects and Change. Supporting this element of the CPR Target Operating Model outputs.
-To ensure effective and efficient decision making takes place across the portfolio with appropriate delegation of duties, with clarity of responsibility and empowerment.
-To ensure a capable Portfolio Management Office operates across the BE portfolio of programmes, projects and business change initiatives.
-Responsible for understanding, documenting and monitoring all constraints, dependencies and material risks across projects in the portfolio.
- Listening for, uncovering and resolving potential conflicts or disagreements about project priorities. - All risks to the delivery of portfolio of work should also be considered and raised with the programme teams and BEST ESG to mitigate the risk to the plan and ultimately delivery.
- Ensuring the delivery of effective risk management and mitigation actions.
-Incorporating business unit strategy execution plans and best practice initiatives into the portfolio planning.
- Working with BE Leadership Team and departments to create a roadmap for future development aligned and prioritised in order to deliver BEs strategic and business objectives.
Safety, Health and Environment (SHE)
-Champion safety culture ensuring that all staff, 3rd party contractors constructively challenge and praise appropriate behaviours, to ensure that all staff and contractors effectively understand and comply with company rules, procedures relating to safety, health and environment and meet performance targets.
What do I need?
-A proven influencer and communicator with stakeholders at all levels
-An experienced portfolio manager with a strong background in portfolio assurance, governance and methodology.
-Experience of developing and managing programmes of work to meet required scope, cost and lead times.
-Experience of leading and/or implementing change management programmes which impact on people/process/systems.
-Establishing effective working relationships with all stakeholders and ensuring effective portfolio communications
-Experience and ability to co-ordinate colleagues, volunteers and contracted parties through expert leadership, motivation, teamwork, supervision and accountability
-IT skills to effectively analyse performance data and deliver formal presentations
-Commercial understanding of value drivers for delivery of operational services, and how to deliver efficiently and effectively
-Understanding of key portfolio metrics and how to use these to drive required outcomes,
-Understanding of key financial metrics and how they are calculated in relation to the business and projects
-Cross departmental knowledge of SSE BE is advantageous, along with its strategic goals and objectives.
-Conducting portfolio meetings and attend project meetings where required
-Ability and knowledge to engage on safety at all levels and instil a high performing safety culture
