About the Department

SSE Enterprise Contracting is one of the UK's largest Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) contractors with a product/service portfolio ranging from M&E LV, HV, Instrumentation, Street Lighting, Facilities Management through to Combined Heat and Power solutions.

What is the role?

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Accounts Payable Manager (APM) will lead a small team performing the Accounts Payable function for SSE Contracting. As APM, you will have responsibility for supporting in the processing and payment of supply chain invoices. This is a hands-on management role and you will be expected to be involved and help solve day to day issue arising in the team and the wider business. Working with the Team leaders, you will ensure control and governance through: (i) documented procedures and processes; (ii) segregation of duties; and (iii) identification and management of risk.

You will be accountable for the implementation of agreed development plans for the AP team of 7 FTE and you will be expected to be reviewing processes and implementing improvements which will deliver business efficiencies. A key component of team development is in relation the performance management and development of colleagues. You should set a good example through disciplined objective setting, regular 1-1s with direct reports, objective performance assessment, and constructive feedback and coaching for performance improvement.

In addition to this, you will drive improvements in the Procure to Pay cycle in partnership with Procurement colleagues and ensure that the function is compliant with obligations under initiatives such as the Prompt Payment Code and Anti-Financial Crime regulations.

What do I need?

We are looking for someone with a background in a high performing service centre which includes payables and other transactional finance activities. The must have sound knowledge of the control environment required in an AP function and have a clear track record of leading and delivering continuous improvement projects.

Our new APM will be numerate and organised with a track record of delivering quality work at pace. Risk aware, they will have a sound understanding of control and governance and will have the skills to enforce these robustly across the team and the wider business. A confident and skilled communicator they will be able to interact and influence with a wide range of stakeholders.

Candidates will ideally be ACA, ACCA or CIMA certified but experience is equally valued. Significant exposure to and experience of a large-scale ERP is essential. Construction sector experience is required including knowledge of CIS and subcontractor payment cycles including retention control.

Intimate knowledge of VAT on different supply types, dealing with supplier legal claims and appreciating the role of supplier statement recs is essential.
